WALK YOUR SPIRITUALITY INTO THE MARKETPLACE
I truly believe in authenticity. I have no time for pomp, for the aggrandized ego, for the veneer of spirituality or for any degree of pretense. That really means the light shines brightest on myself for I hold myself to a high measure.
And that means, in terms of (what is called) spiritual awakening, I’m concerned only where spiritual liberation enters the marketplace of my life. How does it show up in relationships, all of them? How does it show up when the storms of life come? How does it show up when illness arises, or some other insult happens?
Otherwise it seems to me spiritual awakening is somehow only for the self and it is easy for it to become a kind of idealized state that saves us from the human condition. It’s not a panacea, nor a hiding place.
So that’s why I say, ‘Walk your spirituality into the marketplace and see how real and deeply abiding it is.’ And if it still triggers you a bit, there is work to do. Don’t get complacent on the journey, it never ends.
ps. My favorite words are a blend of ‘To thine self be true,’ and ‘I don’t mind what happens.’
Most storms are on the inside We must become skillful sailors And seek rest as the ocean As the storms play themselves out Don’t get lost in the storm, my friend It is a call to mastery. ----------------------- Lord, let me only know a deeper grace Beyond philosophy, beyond any spiritual ideas Beyond all ideas of what is right and wrong Let me know only a deeper grace That loves everything that arises. --------------------- Each moment Is a moment of grace To one who has fallen Into the arms of the divine. --------------------- Without the mystic, the lover, the poet, We are doomed to live in a sterile and loveless world Filled with science and belief But no recognition of the divine mystery At the heart of all existence. --------------------- We have but a moment A flicker of time in eternity Just this breath in and out To be aware of this truth Is to wake up From the dream of life To the magnificence And the miracle How could one do anything but love? -------------------- With one foot in the world And one in eternity He knew himself To be all things And none of them. ------------------- No matter how transcendent Or how detached Or even how ecstatic Our spirituality may make us We still have to enter the marketplace And run errands And meet other people Who have no idea what we are talking about And don’t care And that is where the rubber hits the road. --------------------- The inner garden Must be weeded For love's flowers To grow and thrive Space must be made To allow the sunlight To pour in. --------------------- We search for awakening While grace whispers to us ‘Just fall into an ever deepening acceptance of what is, Beyond the self that thinks it knows Into the mystery that doesn’t need to.’ ---------------------- The universe is alive And you are its ambassador All around you and inside Is the same intelligence Pulsating with divine information How can you think You are separate to all this?
