When giving thanks and remembering gratitude
Is reserved for a special day every year
And surrounded by consumerism and hype
It says so much about our habitual state of consciousness
Implicitly it suggests that giving thanks is not important
For most of the year and is something that can be forgotten
Except when we need to remind ourselves and each other
So the rest of the year, if there is no abiding state of forgiveness,
What is there?
Some terrible words spring to mind
Meanness, accusation, blame, selfishness
Heartlessness and cruelty
And of course selfishness
These are the perennial states behind ordinary consciousness
As we know and accept it
The ego, individual and collective, is aggrandized and revered,
It is conditioned, appealed to, advertised to, and bolstered
There is nothing inherently wrong with this
Except when it becomes so blind and enraptured by the shiny things
And loses any sense of others, caught up as it is by a kind of narcissism
Then it is out of control and has forgotten what to value
Thanksgiving is a state of consciousness
It is not spiritual or religious, transcendent or super human
It is simply our ordinary and natural state
When egoic pathology has been seen through
Gratitude, kindness, forgiveness, compassion
Are what we are made of
And there is no need to develop them
But there is a great need to rediscover them
By dropping the fixation with the self important I
No one is above anyone, no matter how much fame or power might tell us it is
These are illusions that only serve the ugly side of our humanity
And right now we need to draw back from this precipice
And cultivate our goodness
Happiness is Giving Thanks
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
