OPEN THE CAGE
Unless the true heart
Is liberated from its prison
And allowed to be free
It cannot feed our lives
Or the lives of others
If the true heart
Is controlled by righteous mind
It is like a bird that soars in the skies
Held captive in a cage
It is never seen in its true nature
I write these words
As one who, for much of his life,
Was held captive by fear
And righteous anger
Had locked up his wounded heart
Hoping it would protect him
But ending up in prison
We think of the heart as love
But it’s much more than that
It’s our tenderness
Our innocence and vulnerability
It’s our voice and our relaxation
It is our real power
It took me much work, many tears,
Lots of revisiting pain and releasing anger
Lots of energetic body attention
To begin to free up my truth
But I did it, and it was like a miracle
It brought me home to my body
And liberated me into freedom
It’s not spiritual, it’s human
Very human and very real
It may be the first taste of beauty
You have ever had.
