ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE OTHER

Sometimes I take the dog
And go tramping
On the Santa Fe trails

And for a while
I am plunged back in time
Just walking the land as a free man
With a small hunting hound at my heel
The two of us in a kind of harmony

Just walking the land
Doing whatever it is we do
Not complicated
One foot in front of the other
The smell of the desert
Captivating both of us

Ah! the sweet simplicity of it
Something so pure and true
It cannot even be described

And then the return home
And a pile of emails
A complicated world
Of strife and division

Is it possible, I ponder,
To carry that harmony
That simplicity of being,
Into this all involving world
Or are we destined to become
Complicated ourselves
And thereby lose some of our
Inner harmony and naturalness.
